School holiday e-waste tinker and robot build workshop

About this event

Armed with some basic tools (screwdrivers, pliers and wire cutters) and a little know-how, the children will be encouraged to gently and safely pull things apart to see what’s inside discarded electronics. We will look at machines across the eras and talk about changes in technology today, focusing on why these are valuable materials. While taking the devices apart, we will look at how they work, observing any physical mechanisms and making guesses about how information is relayed through motherboards and wires. We will sort through the materials to find pieces that can be used in our afternoon creations. Working with cardboard and reclaimed plastics, students will make simple costumes inspired by vintage science fiction robots. We will practice joining methods such as tabs, lacing and reusable closures, but use traditional adhesives to securely adhere when needed. This Sydney class is suitable for ages 8 to 13 years. It will be a jam-packed day of activities where students explore e-waste, practice design skills and build their very own robot costume or statue to take home. There will be a break for lunch and students are welcome to take snack/water breaks as needed.
